PREVENTIVE CARE

Scaling & Polishing

Remove tough tartar and stains for a deeper clean. Our scaling & polishing leaves teeth smooth, healthy, and noticeably brighter.

Essential Information About Scaling & Polishing

Scaling and polishing is a deeper, more thorough version of a regular cleaning. While daily brushing handles surface plaque, hardened tartar (calculus) along the gumline and between teeth can only be removed with professional instruments.

What Is Scaling?

Scaling uses ultrasonic scalers and fine hand instruments to break up and remove tartar from above and below the gumline. The vibrations gently dislodge mineralized deposits without harming enamel.

What Is Polishing?

After scaling, polishing smooths the tooth surface with a soft rubber cup and gritty paste. This removes residual surface stains from coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco, leaving teeth shiny and harder for new plaque to stick to.

Who Needs Scaling & Polishing?

Most adults benefit from a session every six months. People with gum inflammation, smokers, and diabetic patients often need it every three to four months. Signs you may need scaling include bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, visible tartar, or sensitivity along the gumline.

The Procedure Step by Step

The appointment takes 45 to 60 minutes. Your hygienist first examines the gums and measures pocket depths. Ultrasonic scaling removes the bulk of tartar, followed by hand scaling to clean below the gumline. Stains are polished away, the teeth are flossed, and a fluoride varnish strengthens the enamel.

Is It Painful?

For most patients with mild buildup, scaling is comfortable and feels like a tickle or pressure. Patients with significant tartar or sensitive gums may feel mild discomfort, which is easily managed with topical numbing or a slower approach.

After Care

Mild gum tenderness for 24 to 48 hours is normal. Avoid very hot, cold, or hard foods immediately after. Continue brushing twice daily with a soft brush and floss every day to maintain results.

Why It Matters

Untreated tartar irritates the gums and progresses to periodontitis, the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. A consistent scaling routine prevents that progression and supports the link between oral health and systemic wellness.
