Gum disease — also called periodontal disease — is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, yet many people don’t know they have it. The good news? It’s almost entirely preventable, and the earlier you catch it, the easier it is to reverse.
Stage 1: Gingivitis
The earliest stage. Signs include red, swollen gums that bleed when you brush or floss. At this stage there’s no permanent damage — a professional cleaning and improved home care can reverse it within weeks.
Stage 2: Early periodontitis
If gingivitis isn’t treated, plaque hardens into tartar and bacteria spread below the gum line. The body’s immune response starts to break down the bone that supports your teeth. You might notice bad breath, gum recession, or sensitive teeth.
Stage 3: Moderate periodontitis
Bone loss progresses, gum pockets deepen, and teeth may start to feel slightly loose. Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is needed to remove bacteria below the gum line.
Stage 4: Advanced periodontitis
Severe bone loss, loose teeth, and possible tooth loss. Surgical treatment, bone grafts, or extractions may be necessary.
How to prevent gum disease
- Brush twice daily with a soft-bristle brush — don’t forget the gum line
- Floss every day — yes, every day
- Use an antibacterial mouthwash if your dentist recommends it
- Quit smoking — it’s one of the biggest risk factors
- See your dentist every 6 months for a professional cleaning
