Dry Mouth (Xerostomia): Causes, Risks, and Daily Solutions

If your mouth feels sticky, dry, or constantly thirsty, you are not alone. Dry mouth, medically called xerostomia, affects around 1 in 5 adults, and it is particularly common in Dubai because of the hot, dry climate and high air-conditioning exposure.

It might sound like a minor annoyance, but dry mouth has real dental consequences. Here is what causes it, why it matters, and what you can do today to feel better.

Why saliva matters more than you think

Saliva is one of your body’s most underrated tools. It washes away food particles, neutralizes the acids that cause cavities, contains minerals that rebuild enamel, and keeps your mouth comfortable. When saliva flow drops, all of those protections drop with it.

Patients with chronic dry mouth are several times more likely to develop cavities and gum disease, even with good brushing habits.

Common causes of dry mouth

  • Medications. More than 400 common drugs list dry mouth as a side effect, including antihistamines, antidepressants, and blood pressure medications.
  • Dehydration. In Dubai’s climate, most people drink less water than they need. Coffee, tea, and air conditioning all dry you out further.
  • Mouth breathing. Whether from a stuffy nose, allergies, or sleeping with your mouth open, breathing through your mouth dries it out quickly.
  • Aging. Saliva production naturally decreases with age, especially after 50.
  • Medical conditions. Diabetes, autoimmune diseases like Sjogren’s syndrome, and thyroid problems can reduce saliva.
  • Smoking and alcohol. Both reduce saliva flow and irritate oral tissues.

Signs you have dry mouth

  • A sticky, cottony feeling in your mouth
  • Difficulty swallowing or chewing dry foods
  • Cracked lips or sore corners of the mouth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • A burning sensation, especially on the tongue
  • Waking up at night to drink water

Daily solutions that actually work

Sip water all day, not just at meals. Carry a bottle with you. Small frequent sips help more than chugging a glass once an hour.

Chew sugar-free gum with xylitol. Chewing stimulates saliva flow, and xylitol actually reduces cavity-causing bacteria.

Use an alcohol-free mouthwash. Many regular mouthwashes contain alcohol that worsens dryness. Look for ones labeled for dry mouth.

Use a humidifier at night. Dubai’s air conditioning is a major drying culprit while you sleep.

Avoid drying triggers. Cut back on caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco.

When to see your dentist

If dry mouth is constant, painful, or you are getting more cavities than usual, do not wait. We can prescribe special saliva substitutes, apply high-fluoride treatments to protect your enamel, and help you figure out if a medication change might be the underlying cause.
