Traditional dental implants require months between placing the implant and attaching the final crown. But for many patients, same-day implants — also called immediate-load implants — can deliver a functional tooth on the same day as surgery. Sounds great, but is it right for you?
How same-day implants work
In a single appointment, the dentist removes the damaged tooth (if needed), places a titanium implant into the jaw, and attaches a temporary crown the same day. After 3–6 months of healing — during which the implant fuses to your bone (osseointegration) — your temporary crown is replaced with a permanent one.
Who is a good candidate?
- Patients with good bone quality in the implant area
- People in good general health, especially non-smokers
- Patients with healthy gums — no active periodontal disease
- Adequate bone volume (or willingness to consider bone grafting)
Who should consider the traditional method instead?
- Heavy smokers or uncontrolled diabetics — higher risk of failure
- Severe bone loss requiring substantial grafting first
- Patients with significant grinding (bruxism) without a night guard plan
- Complex bite or multiple-implant cases that need careful staging
Pros and cons
Pros: One surgery instead of two, less time without a tooth, immediate aesthetics, often less overall cost.
Cons: Not everyone qualifies, slightly higher technical demand on the dentist, you must follow post-op care meticulously to protect the healing implant.
