You invested in your smile. Now let us make sure it lasts.
Modern porcelain veneers can last 10 to 15 years, sometimes longer. But how you care for them in the first few weeks, and the habits you build for the next decade, make all the difference.
The first 48 hours after veneer placement
- Avoid hot or very cold foods. Your teeth may be slightly sensitive while the bond fully sets.
- Skip hard or sticky foods. No nuts, ice, caramel, or chewy candy.
- Avoid coffee, red wine, and dark berries. The bonding cement is still curing and can pick up stains.
- Brush gently. Use a soft-bristled brush.
The first month: building good habits
- Brush twice a day with a non-abrasive toothpaste. Avoid whitening toothpastes they can dull porcelain.
- Floss daily. Plaque buildup at the gumline is the number one cause of veneer failure.
- Switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush. Medium and hard bristles can scratch the polish over time.
- Use an alcohol-free mouthwash. Alcohol can weaken the bonding agent over years.
Daily habits that protect veneers for years
Do not chew hard objects. No pens, ice cubes, fingernails, or bottle caps. Porcelain is strong but it can chip.
Watch staining foods and drinks. Rinse with water after coffee, tea, red wine, curry, or beetroot.
If you grind your teeth, wear a night guard. Bruxism is the single biggest threat to veneer longevity.
Do not use your teeth as tools. Tearing open packaging, holding pins, or biting threads can crack veneers.
Wear a mouthguard for contact sports.
Years 1 to 5: regular maintenance
Visit your dentist every 6 months for a checkup and professional cleaning. Catching small issues early is what gives veneers their long life.
Watch out for: sensitivity to hot or cold, rough edges, a change in bite, or discoloration at the gumline.
Years 5 to 10: extending the lifespan
By year 7 or 8, you may notice tiny cosmetic changes: slight edge wear, very subtle staining around the gum margins, or minor surface dulling. These are normal and usually polishable.
Many of our patients keep their veneers in great condition for 12 to 15 years with regular cleanings, a night guard, and good home care.
The bottom line
Veneers do not require any exotic care. Brush, floss, see your dentist twice a year, do not chew ice, and wear a night guard if you grind. That is essentially it.
