What is a dental crown?

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth. Dentists often suggest one when a tooth is badly broken, has a large old filling, is weak after root canal treatment, or needs to support a bridge. You can read more on our dental crowns page.

Zirconia vs PFM crowns: what is the difference?

Zirconia crowns

Zirconia is a strong, tooth-coloured ceramic with no metal inside. Many patients choose it for back teeth that take heavy biting forces, and for front teeth when they want a natural shade with no dark line near the gum. It is usually the higher-priced option.

PFM (porcelain fused to metal) crowns

A PFM crown has a metal base covered with porcelain. It has a long history of use and costs less. Over time, if the gum moves back, a thin grey edge of the metal can sometimes show near the gum line, which some people notice more on front teeth.

Your dentist will explain which material suits your tooth, your bite and your budget. If you are deciding between a crown and a veneer, our guide on veneers vs crowns may help.

What affects the final price of a crown?

  • Material: zirconia and PFM are priced differently.
  • Condition of the tooth: a tooth with deep decay or infection may need a filling, a core build-up or a root canal before the crown, and these are charged separately.
  • Number of units: a bridge replaces a missing tooth by joining crowns together, and each unit is priced per tooth.
  • X-rays: your dentist may need an X-ray to check the root and bone before planning.
  • Gum health: gum disease may need treatment first so the crown sits on healthy tissue.

What happens during crown treatment?

  1. Free consultation: the dentist checks the tooth, takes an X-ray in-house if needed and explains your options and costs.
  2. Preparation: the tooth is shaped under local anaesthetic and an impression or scan is taken.
  3. Temporary crown: a temporary cap protects the tooth while the final crown is made.
  4. Fitting: the final crown is checked for fit, bite and shade, then fixed in place.

The number of visits depends on your case, and your dentist will tell you the plan at the consultation.

Risks and aftercare

Like any dental treatment, crowns have possible risks. These can include sensitivity after the tooth is prepared, a crown that loosens or chips, decay at the edge of the crown if cleaning is poor, and in some cases the need for root canal treatment later. Results vary from person to person, and your dentist will explain the risks before you decide. Brush twice a day, clean between teeth and keep regular check-ups to help your crown last.

Paying for your crown

You can pay by cash, card, Tabby or Tamara (read our guide to Tabby and Tamara for dental treatment). Insurance is on a reimbursement basis only: you pay at the clinic and we provide the documents for your claim. We do not offer direct billing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a dental crown cost in Dubai at Anytime Dental?

Under our Early Christmas Offers from 1 November 2026, a zirconia crown or bridge starts from AED 750 per tooth and a PFM crown or bridge is AED 600 per tooth. These are estimates; the final price is confirmed after a free consultation and, where needed, an X-ray.

Is zirconia better than PFM?

Each has its uses. Zirconia has no metal and a tooth-coloured look, while PFM costs less and has a long history of use. Your dentist will suggest the option that suits your tooth and bite.

Do I need a root canal before a crown?

Not always. A root canal is only needed if the nerve is infected or badly damaged. Your dentist checks this with an examination and an X-ray.

Can I pay for a crown in instalments?

Yes, you can use Tabby or Tamara, as well as cash or card.

Does insurance cover dental crowns?

We work on a reimbursement basis only. You pay at the clinic and we give you the documents to claim from your insurer, depending on your policy.

Can I walk in for a crown consultation?

Yes. Walk-ins are welcome at both branches, daily from 10 AM to 9 PM, and the consultation is free.
