A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers a damaged tooth from the gumline up, restoring its strength, shape, and appearance. Modern crowns look and feel like natural teeth.

When You Need a Crown

Crowns are recommended after a root canal, when a tooth has a very large filling, when a tooth is cracked or worn down, to attach a bridge, or to complete a dental implant. They also correct cosmetic issues like severely discolored or misshapen teeth.

Materials Available

All-ceramic crowns (porcelain or zirconia) are the most popular for their natural appearance. Zirconia is exceptionally strong for back teeth. Porcelain-fused-to-metal balances strength and aesthetics. Gold crowns are extremely durable and gentle on opposing teeth but visible.

The Two-Visit Process

Visit 1: Your dentist numbs the area, reshapes the tooth to fit the crown, and takes a digital scan or impression. A temporary crown is fitted while the permanent is custom-made in a dental lab.

Visit 2 (one to two weeks later): The temporary is removed, the permanent crown is checked for fit and color, and bonded with strong dental cement.

Same-Day Crowns

Some clinics offer same-day crowns using in-office milling technology like CEREC. The entire process is completed in about two hours.

How Long They Last

A well-made crown lasts 10 to 20 years, and many patients get even longer with proper care. Brushing twice daily, flossing carefully, and avoiding ice or pen-chewing prolong the crown\u2019s life. A night guard is recommended if you grind your teeth.
