A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth using a row of crowns. The replacement teeth (pontics) are anchored by crowns cemented onto the natural teeth on either side of the gap.

When a Bridge Is the Right Choice

Bridges are ideal when the teeth on either side of the gap already need crowns, when surgery is not possible or desired, or when bone volume is too low for an implant without grafting. They are faster and less expensive than implants up front.

Types of Bridges

Traditional bridges use crowns on natural teeth on each side. Cantilever bridges anchor on just one side. Maryland bridges use a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the back of adjacent teeth. Implant-supported bridges replace multiple missing teeth using implants instead of natural anchors.

The Process

Two appointments over two to three weeks. The first visit prepares the anchor teeth and takes impressions; a temporary bridge protects them. The second visit fits, adjusts, and cements the permanent bridge.

How Long They Last

A well-made bridge typically lasts 10 to 15 years. Longevity depends on hygiene, bite forces, and the health of the anchor teeth.

Caring for Your Bridge

Brush twice daily and use floss threaders, interdental brushes, or a water flosser to clean under the pontic. Keep up with six-month cleanings to monitor the supporting teeth.
