At a glance
- A root canal tries to keep your natural tooth. An extraction removes it, and the gap usually needs to be replaced later.
- The choice depends on how much healthy tooth is left, the gum and bone around it, cracks, your overall health and your budget.
- An X-ray is needed to decide. Both of our branches have in-house X-ray.
- Free consultation, walk-ins welcome, open daily 10 AM to 9 PM in Deira and Barsha Heights.
If a tooth is badly decayed, infected or cracked, the dentist may give you two options: save it with a root canal, or take it out. Both are common treatments, and neither is right for every case. This guide explains what each option involves, the questions that usually decide it, and what to ask at your consultation so you can choose with clear information.
What a root canal does
Inside every tooth is the pulp, the soft tissue with nerves and blood vessels. When deep decay or a crack lets bacteria reach the pulp, it can become inflamed or infected. In a root canal treatment, the dentist numbs the area, removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the canals, then fills and seals them. Back teeth that have had a root canal often need a dental crown afterwards, because the remaining tooth can be more prone to breaking.
Depending on the tooth and the infection, a root canal may be done in one visit or over two or more visits.
What an extraction does
A tooth extraction removes the whole tooth under local anaesthetic. A simple extraction is usually a short appointment. Surgical extractions, for example for some wisdom teeth or broken roots, take longer. Healing of the gum usually takes one to two weeks, and the bone underneath continues to remodel for some months. We cover the recovery steps in our tooth extraction aftercare guide.
Root canal vs extraction: side by side
| Point | Root canal | Extraction |
|---|---|---|
| Your natural tooth | Kept, if it can be restored | Removed |
| Visits | One or more, plus a crown in many cases | Usually one, plus later visits if you replace the tooth |
| After treatment | Tooth may feel tender for a few days | Socket needs care while it heals |
| Longer term | Needs normal brushing, flossing and check-ups | Gap may need an implant, bridge or denture |
What usually decides it
How much healthy tooth is left
A root canal only makes sense if enough sound tooth remains to hold a filling or crown. If decay goes far below the gum line, the tooth may not be restorable.
Cracks and fractures
A crack limited to the crown of the tooth can often be managed. A crack that runs down into the root usually cannot, and extraction is more likely to be advised.
Gum and bone support
If gum disease has caused a lot of bone loss and the tooth is loose, saving it with a root canal may not help much. The X-ray shows the bone level around the root.
The position of the tooth
Front teeth affect how you smile and speak, and molars do most of the chewing. Wisdom teeth that are hard to reach or have no opposing tooth are more often removed than treated.
Cost over time, not just today
An extraction often costs less on the day. But a missing tooth can let neighbouring teeth drift or tilt and the opposite tooth over-erupt, which is why many people later replace it with a dental implant, a bridge or a denture. When you compare prices, compare the full plan for each option. At Anytime Dental, prices are estimates until the dentist has examined you, and the final price is confirmed after consultation. You can pay by cash, card, Tabby or Tamara.
Signs you should get checked soon
- Toothache that wakes you up or lasts after hot or cold food
- Swelling of the gum or face near a tooth
- A small pimple-like bump on the gum
- A tooth that has turned darker than the others
- Pain when biting, or a tooth that feels loose
These signs do not always mean you need a root canal or an extraction, but they should be looked at. Facial swelling with fever or difficulty swallowing needs urgent medical attention.
Questions to ask your dentist
- Can this tooth be restored, and what does the X-ray show?
- Will I need a crown after the root canal?
- If I remove it, what are my options to replace it, and when?
- What are the risks of each option for my case?
- What is the estimated total cost of each full plan?

Both treatments carry risks. A root canal can cause tenderness for a few days, and a treated tooth can sometimes become reinfected or fracture and need further treatment. An extraction can cause swelling, bleeding, discomfort or a dry socket, and the gap may affect nearby teeth. Results vary from person to person. Your dentist will explain the risks and alternatives for your case.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to have a root canal or pull the tooth?
It depends on your tooth. If enough healthy tooth remains and the bone support is good, a root canal lets you keep your natural tooth. If the tooth is cracked into the root, very loose or cannot be restored, extraction may be advised. The dentist decides with you after an exam and X-ray.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?
Back teeth often need a crown after a root canal because they take strong chewing forces. Some front teeth can be restored with a filling. Your dentist will tell you which applies to your tooth.
What happens if I leave a gap after an extraction?
Over time the teeth next to the gap can drift or tilt and the opposite tooth can move into the space. This is why many people replace a missing tooth with an implant, bridge or denture.
How much does a root canal or extraction cost in Dubai?
The cost depends on the tooth, the number of canals, whether a crown is needed and whether the extraction is simple or surgical. At Anytime Dental, prices are estimates until the dentist has examined you, and the final price is confirmed after consultation.
Can I use insurance or pay in instalments?
We work with insurance on a reimbursement basis only, so you pay at the clinic and claim from your insurer with the documents we give you. You can pay by cash, card, Tabby or Tamara.
