Essential Information About Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers a damaged tooth from the gumline up, restoring its strength, shape, and appearance. Modern crowns look and feel like natural teeth.

When You Need a Crown

Crowns are recommended after a root canal, when a tooth has a very large filling, when a tooth is cracked or worn down, to attach a bridge, or to complete a dental implant. They also correct cosmetic issues like severely discolored or misshapen teeth.

Materials Available

All-ceramic crowns (porcelain or zirconia) are the most popular for their natural appearance. Zirconia is exceptionally strong for back teeth. Porcelain-fused-to-metal balances strength and aesthetics. Gold crowns are extremely durable and gentle on opposing teeth but visible.

The Two-Visit Process

Visit 1: Your dentist numbs the area, reshapes the tooth to fit the crown, and takes a digital scan or impression. A temporary crown is fitted while the permanent is custom-made in a dental lab.

Visit 2 (one to two weeks later): The temporary is removed, the permanent crown is checked for fit and color, and bonded with strong dental cement.

Same-Day Crowns

Some clinics offer same-day crowns using in-office milling technology like CEREC. The entire process is completed in about two hours.

How Long They Last

A well-made crown lasts 10 to 20 years, and many patients get even longer with proper care. Brushing twice daily, flossing carefully, and avoiding ice or pen-chewing prolong the crown\u2019s life. A night guard is recommended if you grind your teeth.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions from our patients in Dubai

How much does a dental crown cost at Anytime Dental?
The price depends on the material, such as PFM, zirconia or E-max, and on the condition of the tooth. Your dentist checks the tooth with an X-ray during a free consultation and confirms the final price before you start.
How long does a dental crown last?
Many crowns last 10 years or more with good care, but this varies from person to person. Grinding your teeth, biting hard objects and gum disease can shorten their life. Regular check-ups help catch problems early.
How many visits do I need for a crown?
Usually two. At the first visit the tooth is prepared, an impression is taken and a temporary crown is placed. At the second visit the final crown is fitted and adjusted to your bite.
Do I need a root canal before a crown?
Not always. A root canal is needed only if the nerve of the tooth is infected or badly damaged. Your dentist will check this with an X-ray and explain the options.
What are the risks of a dental crown?
Possible risks include sensitivity, a crown that loosens or chips, gum irritation around the edge, and in some cases the nerve of the tooth needing treatment later. Your dentist will explain the risks for your case.
