Essential Information About Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is the careful removal of a tooth from its socket. It is one of the most common procedures in dentistry and, when performed by a skilled clinician, is a routine procedure.

When Is Extraction Necessary?

Common reasons include severe decay that cannot be restored, advanced gum disease causing tooth mobility, a tooth fractured below the gumline, impacted wisdom teeth, or crowding that requires orthodontic preparation.

Types of Extraction

Simple extractions remove fully erupted teeth using forceps under local anesthesia. Surgical extractions are needed for teeth that are broken, impacted, or fully covered by gum or bone; a small incision allows the tooth to be removed in sections.

What to Expect

Your dentist will take an X-ray, numb the area thoroughly with local anesthesia, gently loosen the tooth, and remove it. You will feel pressure, but the area stays numb during the procedure. The appointment usually takes 20 to 40 minutes for simple cases and up to an hour for surgical ones.

After Care

Bite firmly on gauze for 30 to 45 minutes to form a clot. Apply ice to the cheek to reduce swelling. Eat soft, cool foods for the first 24 hours. Do not use a straw, smoke, or rinse vigorously for at least three days to avoid dry socket. Take prescribed pain medication on schedule.

Healing Timeline

The socket forms a stable clot within hours. Soft tissue heals over two to three weeks, and bone fills in over several months. Most patients return to normal activities the next day.

Replacing the Tooth

Unless the extracted tooth is a wisdom tooth, replacement is usually recommended. Options include a dental implant, a fixed bridge, or a removable partial denture. Replacing prevents adjacent teeth from drifting and preserves the jawbone over time.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions from our patients in Dubai

How much does a tooth extraction cost at Anytime Dental?
The price depends on the tooth and on whether it can be removed simply or needs a surgical extraction, for example an impacted wisdom tooth. Your dentist checks the tooth with an X-ray during a free consultation and confirms the final price before you start.
Does a tooth extraction hurt?
The area is numbed with local anaesthesia, so most patients feel pressure rather than sharp pain during the extraction. Soreness and swelling for a few days afterwards are common. Your dentist will advise you on pain relief and what to eat while it heals.
How long does it take to heal after an extraction?
The gum usually heals over two to three weeks, and the bone fills in over a few months. Many patients go back to normal daily activities the next day, but recovery varies from person to person, and surgical or wisdom tooth extractions can take longer.
Do you remove wisdom teeth?
Yes. We take an X-ray at the clinic to see the position of the wisdom tooth and its roots. If it is impacted or close to a nerve, your dentist will explain whether a surgical extraction is needed, the risks involved, and whether a referral is the safer option for your case.
What is dry socket and how can I avoid it?
Dry socket happens when the blood clot in the socket is lost too early, which can cause pain a few days after the extraction. To lower the risk, avoid smoking, drinking through a straw and rinsing hard for the first few days, and follow your dentist's aftercare instructions.
Should I replace the tooth after extraction?
For most teeth other than wisdom teeth, replacing the gap helps stop nearby teeth from shifting and protects the jawbone. Options include a dental implant, a bridge or a partial denture. Your dentist will explain the options, risks and costs for your case.
